The Rules of Snooker – EXPLAINED!
I already knew the rules to snooker, however, this is a great video for those who are unfamiliar with the sport, as it can be confusing if you don’t know the rules 🙂
@Linden Lloyd Yes, to someone who hasn’t seen it before, it looks confusing. But once you explain it properly, it’s easy enough.
Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe if you haven’t already 🙂
Thank you! I was having trouble understanding when the free ball rule should be applied and you explained it well.
+syiadn You’re welcome, I’m glad I helped. Be sure to share this video and subscribe 🙂
Great video, Ninh, with clear instructions! Thank for posting it. I do have a question, if you don’t mind, how many points is the black ball? I only heard that it was a maximum of 7.
+Brian Kelly Hi Brian. The black ball is worth 7 points. Sorry for the late reply, be sure to share this video and subscribe 🙂
Snooker sounds a million times less complex after watching this vid.
Big Baller Brand baby
It’s a pretty simple game.
But is million times more complex when you play it.
That’s because the vid is total garbage.
ya you say that, but i’m drunk every time i play it, and wind up being just as confused
As an American, I didn’t understand snooker. Your video was clear, concise and now I can actually understand what I’m watching so thank you. Now just help me understand cricket and I’m set
Link to the cricket tutorial video!
We played it here in the Midwest and pool halls all over in the 70s
@Matthew Train there have been snooker tables in the United States ever since I’ve been here and that’s been 65 years I don’t know what’s going on but it’s not his many as eight ball tables but most pool halls from the forties to the 70s had several snooker tables
@Rick with Soil Samurai Gardens I would rather have my nuts crushed in a vice than watch cricket. An absolutely ridiculous HORRIBLE game.
We used to play snooker at my cousins house 20 years ago, had almost forgotten the rules. It’s nice to have a medium table that you can choose this, 8Bp or 9Bp any time
This is an excellent job of explaining the game in just a few minutes of well thought out topics and well chosen words. It could hardly be done better in the amount of time consumed or more clearly.
Thanks Harold! I appreciate the compliments! Thanks man, be sure to share this video and subscribe 🙂
Thanks for a concise and well structured explanation!
This video is AMAZING! very clear, precise and on point. Keep up the good work!
Thanks very much! We’re playing Jimmy White’s Whirlwind Snooker on our next podcast, and I had no idea how to play. Very informative and well-done!
Great video, it really helped me understand the rules. Thank you for making this video and keep up the great work.
Wow, the first 1 minute and 45 seconds of this video was a PERFECT explanation of how to play this game. Thank you!!!
Thanks bro, much appreciated.
Ninh Ly please explain safety play. You failed to do this.
Here is a response to the ‘tin foil hat wearing conspiracy nuts’ indicating that the maximum break is actually 155.
Under normal conditions, the maximum break is 147. This is widely considered fact and is taken as the maximum that a player can score BY THEMSELVES in one trip to the table, WITHOUT the assistance of fouls.
Once you start adding fanciful and unrealistic scenarios that a pro player would foul on the black on the very first shot (they wouldn’t) or be given a free ball near to the start of the game (unlikely), some uneducated individuals insist that the maximum break is 155. This has never happened in the history of professional snooker.
But then you can take it hypothetically further … a player fouls on the black on the very first shot, the other player asks him to repeat the shot, he fouls on the black again, the other player asks him to repeat the shot, he fouls on the black AGAIN, but this time, the other player comes to the table and then scores the maximum 147. This leaves the final score 168 – 0.
So therefore the maximum break is 168.
Or is it 175?
Or is it 770?
Has any score over 155 ever happened in the professional game? Nope.
@Ninh Ly yes it has, there hasn’t been a 155 professionally but there have been a number of breaks over 147
@Bijay Magar Official snooker rules do actually cover this situation: When only the black ball is left and a player commits a foul, the other player receives 7 points (as normally with a foul involving black) and the frame ends immediately after, using the scores after those penalty points have been awarded to determine the winner. This is also why players sometimes don’t pot the final black at the end, if they don’t need it to win the frame and aren’t close to century break (break of 100 or more, which is a statistic that is kept track of, similar to throwing 180s in darts), since a player cannot lose a frame if they are ahead by more than 14 points by the time you get to the final black.
@Wittydit After having potted a red, you get the choice of any other color for your next shot. However, snooker rules state you have to select a specific color to go for and you then have to hit your chosen color first (and this is also the only color you may pot this turn, any other color that you unintentionally pot is a foul). You don’t have to say it if it’s obvious which color you’re aiming for but when there’s multiple colors close to each other, you may be asked to nominate the specific color you want to play.
what about snooker plus
@Harvey Da Lates Snooker Plus adds two colored balls to the game: An orange ball worth 8 points, placed in between the blue and pink balls, and a purple ball worth 10 points, placed in between the blue and brown balls. The rules are the exact same as regular snooker, with the minor difference that if a frame ends in a tie, the purple ball is put on the black spot to decide a winner instead of the black ball in regular snooker
You’ve actually just explained this so well and clearly, I’ve never understood snooker at all but now I almost fully understand, thanks!!

Thank you for the great video! It really helped me understand the basics. I have a question: If you pot 2 red balls at the same time, what would happen?
You score two points.
Thank you for making this video, I was trying to explain to my son what Snooker is and this video was very helpful.
Thanks! Glad this video helps!
Great simple explanation! Thank you for your efforts since i know how long making these videos may take! Thank you! Thank you!
Your videos are fantastic man! Anytime I’m trying to figure out a new sport I always go to you. Hats off brother
Been watching snooker highlights recently and although I appreciated the shots, I had zero idea why some of the plays got applause. Thanks for the explanation
I have played pool all of my life, but snooker has always been a mystery to me. I found your video very informative and easy to follow. Thanks for making the video and breaking the mystery for me.
